The end dawns for makers of MP3 players and digital camcorders, according to mobile phone giant Nokia. The Finnish maker of cameraphones has seen a huge growth spurt when it comes to the handy units, and they even think this could spell the end for traditional photography companies, which have been struggling for years:
Anssi Vanjoki, head of the multimedia unit at the world’s largest cellphone maker, pointed in comments published on Tuesday to Nokia’s 2000 forecast of the death of the photo industry, and said the same fate was looming for other sectors.
Nokia made 100 million cameraphones last year, making it the world’s largest camera manufacturer.
Vanjoki didn’t stop there, he explained that the next to die are MP3 players makers. Nokia sold 40 million units of headphones last year and expects a double in 2007, as smartphone capabilities extend. Video quality on phones is rapidly improving and content is growing quickly.
In the next 6-12 months, there will be more of these announcements. The next to disappear will be the makers of music devices and then the manufacturers of video cameras,” Vanjoki was quoted as saying.
Not upbeat news if you’re in one of these businesses, but great to hear if you’re a stockholder of Nokia.
