Although it seems counter-intuitive, Qualcomm claims that Nokia’s pullout of CDMA won’t hurt the technology. Earlier this week, Nokia announced they would quit making CDMA phones. The two companies have had bitter disputes concerning CDMA for years. Nokia will make only GSM phones from now on.

CFO Bill Keitel from Qualcomm is unconcerned:

“There are many equipment manufacturers of CDMA2000 that we expect will readily supplant any areas Nokia steps back from,” said Keitel.

Others were nowhere so optimistic. To most it seems obvious that the world’s largest manufacturer of cell phones (Nokia) stopping production of CDMA can’t help. They’ll no longer be paying Qualcomm royalty fees either. This is a watershed moment for CDMA phone production.
