Wire-tapping at the highest levels of the Greek government? My Big Fat Greek Wire Tapping Scandal is what this one is, and apparently Vodaphone Greece provided the taps, unwittingly for sure. It’s not clear on actually placed the bugging software, but they directly intercepted mobile phone calls made by certain Greek government officials, mostly around the time of the Summer Olympics.
The government went public with the case almost a year after it was informed by Vodafone of the taps. The wire tapping took place from June 2004 until March 2005 and mostly around the August 2004 Athens Olympics.
There’s some speculation that US intelligence is involved, but obviously there’s little proof of that. This case shows us what we should all know: assume someone is listening when you speak on your mobile phone.
