Nokia expands into China mobile market

July 18, 2006 – 9:05 am

Nokia is interested in dominating the Chinese market for mobile phones, and they currently are ahead of their nearest competitor by a wide margin. Their recent expansion into more Chinese retail outlets shouldn’t hurt that goal at all:

Giles said Nokia plans to open a flagship store in China within the next year in a direct challenge to Motorola, the world’s second biggest cellphone maker, which opened a flagship store in Shanghai last week, its first in China.

Nokia has increased their market share in China by 10% this year.

China is actually the world’s largest mobile phone market with over 100 million handsets purchase each year. A lot of these handsets are lower cost than Nokia is used to selling, so a larger network may help increase profitability.
