Motorola announces blowout earnings on record sales

July 19, 2006 – 5:40 pm

We know how well Motorola, and most of the entire cell phone industry, has been doing. We congratulated them recently on the fact they’ve sold 50 million Razrs, a huge accomplishment for any company. Well, of course, all these numbers have added copiously to their bottom line.

- Record quarterly sales of $10.88 billion, up 29 percent compared to second-quarter 2005 sales of $8.41 billion

- Earnings of $.55 per share, versus earnings of $.37 per share in the year-ago quarter

- Record handset shipments of 51.9 million units

- Global handset market share estimated at 22 percent, up 4.3 percentage points versus the year-ago quarter

The incredible winning streak seems to be continuing. Motorola’s continued success in product development continues to captivate us. We should be announcing a special article this week concerning the success of the Motorola Razr, so hopefully we can gain some insights. The phone wars promise to heat up in the second half of the year, but it’s clear that Nokia versus Motorola is the race to watch.
