Messaging phones are all the rage these days. It’s a low key way to “chat” with your friends without arousing the attention of your boss or other co-workers, and a way to pass the time if you’re waiting for a plane, a train or an automobile.

The Nokia 6102i is a messaging machine. It has Express Audio Messaging that records your voice and send it as a message. You can send and receive multimedia messages that include audio, video or text messages from other compatible devices.

This phone features SMS text messaging, picture messaging, Instant Messaging and Email via SMS. The 6102i can access your work and private email accounts; and supports SMTP, POP3, and IMAP4 protocols.

It has an integrated VGA camera that has multiple modes to take the best pictures no matter what the setting is. 3 Preprogrammed settings include Standard, portrait, and night mode. It has a gallery for you to store and edit your pictures. An integrated video player/recorder is another multimedia bonus.

It’s compatible with GPRS, EDGE and HSCSD networks for seamless connectivity. It is Bluetooth enabled and uses infrared and USB technology. It has an internal and external display and iff this isn’t enough, there’s more:

  • Phone book with up to 500 contacts
  • 4.2 MB user memory
  • Alarm clock
  • Notes
  • Calendar
  • To-do list
  • Stopwatch
  • Countdown timer
  • You can use it as an FM tuner (headphones required, not included) download MP3, True Tones and polyphonic ringtones, wallpapers, games and a ton of other entertainment.

It’s hard to believe that all of this is packed into a mobile phone that costs under $100.00, maybe even under $30.00 with discounts and rebates. The 6102i is serviced by Cingular and purchase price doesn’t include airtime or service plan.

    2. I have recently bought 6102i. its a nice phone with an appropriate weight and size.

The phone works fine except for receiving OTA settings. I am using zyb to backup my phonebook and calendar but unable to receive settings from them. On contacting zyb’s support, they said that there is nothing wrong at their end. My friend also has a 6102i and it works fine with them.

Though, I have synced my phone through putting manual setting but I am concerned about receiving OTAs.

    3. Hi Alina..

Thanks for your feedback. I looked around to see what I could find about zyb and it appears that this is a beta program. Mobilecrunch.com did a writeup about this program and said:

In case the Over The Air (OTA) settings don’t work (or as in my case didn’t reach me - likely because some carriers block transmission of messages that contain OTA settings for off-deck providers) Zyb gives very detailed instructions on a phone by phone basis for how to set up the sync conduit manually. It isn’t hard. Once your phone is set to sync you just let it go and in a few minutes your contacts and phone calendar are up on the Zyb website under your profile.

      I hope this is helpful..

    4. Hello Heather

Thanks for the help. The manual settings did work out, ive easily downloaded all of my phonebook contacts but still concerned about not receiving OTA. I guess there is something wrong with my handset because my friend has no problem on the same model.
Thanks for the help, I appreciate it.

    5. You’re welcome!

I’m happy to hear that the manual settings are working for you. If it’s a new handset it might be worth taking back to the place you purchased it at and see if they can’t help you resolve the issue..
