Motorola is not content to be number two to Nokia. Motorola has set extremely high targets: they’re looking to move 500 million units of their incredibly popular Razr family. Nokia has already sold 50 millions units of the Razr, and has announced brand extensions this past week, including the new Razr Maxx. Expectations are running high to overtake their Finnish rival.
According to their CEO Ed Zander:
“We’re definitely aiming to be number one,” he said. “We let the numbers do the talking. Consumers vote. We have to just keep executing.”
By most accounts, they have been executing, and well. But Nokia hasn’t been slouching either and a real dogfight is shaping up for supremacy in the emerging mobile markets of Asia. Nokia is way ahead right now, with lower priced units, although Motorola is making a push. Motorola has also claimed that Nokia’s dropping out of CDMA production has helped them, although they didn’t specific how.
The cell phone manufacturing business is doing exceptionally well right now, and an immediate slowdown seems unlikely. Motorola products are being received well this week and the product launches will continue for the next few months. This month we’ll talk to a Motorola executive about the Razr brand, and what’s made them so successful, so look for our interview soon.
