If you’re hanging on to the dream of keeping your old cell phone through Cingular, expect to start paying more monthly to keep it.

This move is being done in an effort to migrate 5 million subscribers to newer handsets that are compatible with GSM networks, which provides faster data transmission to subscribers.

Cingular subscribers that haven’t upgraded to a newer handset can expect to see this $5.00 surcharge on their monthly bills beginning in September 2006.
