5 Reasons: Why Mobile Phone is More Important than Passport

The British Home Office has found in a survey that people value their mobile sets and iPods more than their passports. You can read more about this survey from this link. I found this part quite interesting:

Only 22% of adults surveyed said they keep their passport locked away. When it comes to iPods, jewellery and other valuables, 28% said they are locked away and another 44% said they were kept securely. Fortunately, only 1% of people said that they keep their valuables in their underwear drawer.

The survey also highlighted that many adults saw reporting the theft of a mobile phone as a higher priority than their passport. Almost eight out of ten (79%) said they would get in touch with their mobile phone company on the day of the burglary to report their phone being stolen whereas only 64% said they would take immediate action to report the loss of their passport. Almost everyone, (97%) said they would report stolen credit cards immediately.

Of course, to me, passport is much more important than a mobile phone. If I lose my passport I would immediately and obviously get worried. I thought a lot why people cared for their mobile phone sets more than their passports and I could think of the following 5 reasons.

1. Price: A mobile phone set is more expensive than a passport. Especially, if you buy a fancy set with multimedia facilities then you would naturally lament the theft of your set.
2. Necessity: If we are in our own country then passport has hardly any use. Passport is important for getting visa and going another country. On the other hand, mobile phone is something we use all the time. Just imagine, life without SMS.
3. Fashion: A mobile phone set is much more fashionable than a passport.
4. Entertainment: We can listen to music and play games with a mobile phone. With a passport we can never have any entertainment.
5. Status: Owning the latest mobile phone set is like a status symbol in many countries. Passport is just same everywhere.
Finally, most thieves are looking for stealing your mobile phone set. However, fewer thieves are thinking of stealing your passport.
