Today Nokia announced that they have purchased a German navigational software company called g5 to help develop mapping and GPS applications on their cell phones.
This is a privately held company with around 70 employees. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
“Maps and navigation are natural elements to be offered in mobile devices but this area hasn’t developed as fast as expected by the market,” said Anssi Vanjoki, Nokia’s general manager for multimedia. “Acquiring gate5 enables Nokia to offer consumers the world-leading mobile location applications, such as maps, routing and navigation at an accelerated speed.”
Nokia purchased mobile content company Loudeye earlier this month as well, so it appears that they are getting more aggressive in offering more diverse products and services to their cellular offerings.
