Mozambique to have its Third Mobile Phone Operator
September 5, 2006 – 3:25 pmWhen it comes to mobile phone, Mozambique is one of the last places on earth that you would want to look. I had to search a lot to find information about this African country. Even until now, the government of Mozambique hardly gave any importance to the cell phone industry. The country has just two operators: Government owned Mcel andf South Africa’s Vodacam. Mobile phone came here in 1997 and I could not find any statistics about the number of mobile phone users. However, I could find positive news about the country that the government may allow another mobile phone operator. I am giving you the news from a report of Macauhub:
The Mozambican government may authorize the creation of a third mobile phone carrier in the country, the minister of Transport and Communications, António Munguambe said last week, according to Monday’s edition of the Notícias newspaper.
There are currently two mobile phone operators in Mozambique, state-owned Mcel andf South Africa’s Vodacam.
Munguambe, who did not disclose the name of the company or the date on which it would go into operation, said “everything depends on the financial feasibility studies that will be carried out in the short term in order to understand the reality of the Mozambican market.”
The report also stated, ‘Vodacom Mozambique, which is controlled by the Vodacom Group Ltd. has around 490,000 subscribers.’ This figure is simply nothing compared to a population of 20 million. So, there is too much space for growth and I am sure that any company that would get the new license will flourish soon. The present government of Mozambique is trying to improve the economy by carrying out numerous economic reforms. It will be better if the government totally opens up the telecom sector.
