Sprint Heads Into Questionable Territory

September 6, 2006 – 6:31 pm

Personally, I think the whole idea of watching a movie on a phone is a bit silly anyway.

It’s hard to see the magnificent scope of Apollo 13, say, rendered down to a pocket-sized 4-square inch screen, much less pay four to six bucks for the privilege. As home entertainment ramps up and up in size, depth, and quality, in order to better mimic the movie-going experience, Sprint and other mobile providers continue to try to find their own personal “iTunes,” complete with the billion dollar boost to their bottom line.

So, Sprint is launching a Pay-Per-View (of sorts) for their Power Vision handsets, hoping to capitalize on the need for the American public to have their eyes on some kind of screen for most of their waking hours. Of course, I’ll admit, I bought an iPod video and, if I’m feeling bored, I might watch a little Strong Bad video to pass five minutes (iTunes Music Store Link), but I’ll be damned if I’m going to try to watch Spider-Man 2 on my phone. I’ll get less eyestrain from reading a book.

But… there you go. Some people will get it, just to look cool, or to number their brains, or ruin their eyes, or whatever. And Sprint might make enough on it to justify continuing or expanding. Just don’t think you’ll see me in line for one.
