California Bans Handheld Cell Phone Use While Driving

September 16, 2006 – 9:43 am

Back in May I reported that California was one step closer to banning handheld cell phone use while driving.

Yesterday California’s Governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, signed the bill into law.

Beginning July 1, 2008 motorists in Cali can look forward to getting citations if they are caught talking on a hand held cell phone. People that use handsfree devices such as a headset or speaker aren’t in violation of the new law.

“The simple fact is, it’s dangerous to talk on your cell phone while driving,” Schwarzenegger said. “So getting people’s hands off their phones and onto their steering wheels is going to make a big difference in road safety.”

Violations will cost motorists $50.00, so my advice is get a wireless headset if you haven’t already and get used to using it.
