Mobile phone companies have done many wonders with their hand sets but they could not do anything substantial regarding display. Most of us don’t like the idea of seeing something in such a small display of a cell phone set. On other hand, if the cell phone companies make the display screen larger then the handsets will not be portable anymore. These days, many cell phone sets contain multimedia capability. You can even enjoy video and live TV programs in your cell phone set. However, because of very small screen watching TV in mobile phone set is a very boring thing to do.

Microvision has the best solution to this problem: PicoP™ Projector. Esato.com has reported:

Alexander Tokman of Microvision has developed a miniature laser based projector display, called “PicoP.” This projector is small enough to fit inside your phone and can display a laptop-sized quality image on surfaces just half a meter away.

I do not know about you but I love this idea. Because of this innovation, now mobile phone users will be hopefully able to enjoy TV programs with much more satisfaction. Alexander Tokman, President and CEO of Microvision, stated about the ‘advantages of the PicoP embedded into a cellphone’:

Form factor, power requirements, and image quality. With Microvision’s IPM embedded into devices such as cell phones or PDAs, the user gets an enriched visual experience and the projected image remains in focus at any distance. The image has brilliant, saturated colors, from spectrally-pure lasers that provide exceptional contrast, giving depth and texture to the image in a continuous and uniform non-pixilated display. This is the ultimate solution for providing a big image from a small package.

I could not find any information about the price of this product. However, I can tell you one thing for sure. I am going to buy PicoP as soon it comes to the market of my city.

What about you?

    2. Microvision can do one better than the projector. Using the same technology (lasers reflecting off a vibrating chip that scans the beam across the screen) they have produced retinal-scanning displays that are apparently awesome (in use already by the military and NOMAD engine repair technicians). The image is high definition and adjustable in size (up to the equivalent of a movie theatre sized screen). But the big advantage of this would be 3D display if each eye were to get a separate image. The image doesn’t replace what you see, but adds to it (augmented reality vs. virtual reality) like a heads up display. Now THAT’S what I want in my next iPod! I read an analyst’s report at http://www.microvision.com from October, 2005 that was very positive. I know that Microvision had some financial difficulties a year ago, but they own a lot of patents. An Apple/Microvision partnership would be economic dynamite.

Oh yeah, the same technology can also be used to scan the retina for security purposes. Look for this to replace credit & debit cards in the next five years.
