China may boast for its huge number of mobile phone users (431.8 million in August, 2006) but this huge number has become a major headache. A large number of users use pre-paid phones. The major advantage of pre-paid phone is that it does not require the user to provide his real name and address. As a result, mobile phone related crimes have sky rocketed in the past few years. Sending sexual or pornography related text messages, advertise of fake diplomas, dealing of illegal firearms, and various other heinous crimes are taking place through mobile phones.
Looking at this present situation, China’s Ministry of Information is bringing out a new law. Under the new law, a mobile phone user will have to submit his real name and address.
Mobile companies in China are afraid that this might reduce their number of users and increase their operational cost. An official of the Chinese Ministry of information also admitted the possibility of incurring losses but he added that it would be a short term loss. In fact, if the new law comes out it would assure the companies long term operation and reduce the management risk of the telephone operators.
I must admit that, in this present age, mobile phone is a very necessary thing. One can communicate from any part of the country with the help of a mobile phone. It saves time, money, and energy. However, every thing has its demerits. I think that this new law would curb the number of mobile phone related crimes and would help the mobile phone companies to continue their business for a long time.
