Mobile Phone Movies: The Next Big Business

Recently, many of you have seen the TV commercial of Nokia N93 phone where UK actor Gary Oldman shoots himself with a Nokia N93 in the street and says “All the world is a stage and all men & women merely players”. Well readers, like it or not but now mobile phone equipped with enhanced video capabilities have really turned the world into a STAGE and all the MEN & WOMEN into players. A new industry of mobile cinema has started to grow. The most attractive feature of mobile cinema is that it is easy to make. A person can take the mobile phone anywhere they want.

“Capturing moments with a mobile phone can be a fun and liberating experience. The best part is you get people going about their chores naturally and not over-reacting unlike when they realize that they are being filmed,” said Royston.

These are the words of Royston Tan, one of the rising Singapore filmmakers. Recently, Roy attended the Mobile Film Makers 2006 Award regional workshop held at Discovery Network Asia Office in Singapore. He said that while filming with his mobile on the street, most people thought that he was text messaging some one. This is why the filming was very easy. Few months ago, Royston filmed a typhoon with his mobile in Japan. He said that that this proved that mobile is weather proof. One can shoot it in rough weathers: heavy rain or strong wind.

Well, it is a reality that these are early days for mobile phone movies. We have to wait another 2-3 years to understand whether mobile phones will become a big hit or not. I am optimistic about it because the number of mobile is increasing more than any other gadgets.
