Taiwan: The Land of Mobile Phone Production
November 1, 2006 – 12:15 pmABI Research, a New York based technology market research firm, in their research forecasts predicted that Taiwan will be producing more than one fourth of the total mobile phone of the world by 2008. According to a major research firm of Taiwan, the Taiwanese mobile phone companies are now generating more than $2 billion per quarter. The report published in iTnews.com.au says:
Taiwan-based manufacturers will be making more than a quarter of all mobile phones within two years, analysts predict.
The number of handsets rolling off production lines in Taiwanese-owned factories, many of them situated in China, will reach 281 million by 2008, according to new forecasts from ABI Research.
In 2006, the total mobile phone production around the world already reached 900 million units and would further increase by 2008, now, you can easily get a rough guess about the increasing cellphone appetite of Taiwan. Electronic products are one of the major export items of Taiwan. The country it self has a high penetration of mobile and internet. At present, Taiwanese mobile phone producers have acquired a larger portion of the global mobile phone market.
Famous Taiwanese companies such as, BenQ, Compal Communications, and Arima have seen their share doubling since 2004. That year, these companies produced 70million mobile phone sets which accounts for 12 percent of the worldwide mobile phone production.
Along with mobile phone manufacturing, Taiwanese firms would also take over a significant portion of mobile phone designing functions for the brand mobile phone producers; a role known as Original Design Manufacturer (ODM). Major mobile phone producing companies who have outsourced their ODM in Taiwan include Motorola and Sony Ericsson.
Good news for Taiwanese companies. They need to promote their country as a mobile phone hub.
