It is a funny thing that universities teach us many things but not the things touches us most importantly. Well, take the example of cell phone. How many universities in the world have separate departments about cell phones? There are over 2 billion cell phone users today but hardly any university has independent departments on cell phone. I am happy that Samsung is trying to make a difference in this regard.
Samsung has joined hand with Sungkyunkwan University to set up a cell phone technology department. I am giving you the full news release of Sungkyunkwan University here:
Samsung Electronics, the world’s third-largest producer of mobile handsets, plans to
set up a cell phone technology department in Seoul-based Sungkyunkwan University next year.
Sungkyunkwan University yesterday said its president Seo Jung-don will meet Samsung President Lee Ki-tae this Friday to sign an agreement on the new department.
The department will be Korea’s first to offer a major on cell phone technology in the
country’s history.
“The department will enroll a total of 52 top students _ 12 for doctorate degrees and
40 for bachelor’s degrees beginning next year,’’Sungkyunkwan spokesman Choi Young-rock said.
“Samsung will financially support all 52 students with full scholarships and subsidized living costs. In addition, the company will recruit them after graduation,’’ Choi said.
The envisioned department will include five courses in emerging fields such as cell phone interfacing, embedded software, mobile platforms and WiBro.
WiBro is a made-in-Korea technology enabling people on the move to remain connected to the Internet _ Samsung co-developed the go-anywhere Internet services.
When contacted, Samsung said the unprecedented cellular phone department is about the company’s efforts to create competent talent.
“Top-tier talent is becoming more and more important in the tech-heavy cell phone industry. We hope to nurture the cream of the crop with our own efforts,’’ a Samsung spokesman said.
This is not the first time that Samsung Electronics has masterminded the opening of an industry-friendly department as the firm established a semiconductor-associated course in Sungkyunkwan in 1996.
Sungkyunkwan, which was founded over 600 years ago by a royal decree to promote scholar ship in Confucianism here, forged a close relationship with Samsung a decade ago.
The Samsung Group, Korea’s biggest conglomerate, acquired the universitys foundation in 1996 and spent a lot of money to enhance the image of the then mid-tier school.
Samsung has spent 536 billion won on the university over the past nine years and the group is expected to funnel a total of 80 billion won this year.
On the strength of the money, the university has been able to climb fast in the highly
hierarchal structure of Korean universities.
I hope that this department will become successful and new things will be discovered in the cell phone technology. Actually, for great research, university is the best place. What is needed that all the other mobile phone companies follow the example of Samsung and invest in setting up new departments on cell phone around the world.
