UAE: Mobile Phone Television Coming Soon

November 18, 2006 – 2:54 pm

UAE has one of the highest mobile phone densities in the world. Most people in this country have decent income and that is why UAE is a lucrative market for telecom companies. It seems that UAE is going to become even a more lucrative market for the mobile phone companies as mobile phone television is going to come soon in the country. du is going to provide this service soon to the customers.

Gulf news reported about this matter:

“du, the UAE’s new telecommunication operator, will introduce DVB-H, a new mobile TV technology, in the UAE at the beginning of 2007, an official said yesterday.

Dubai Media City (DMC), the region’s media hub, will partner with du and the country’s largest broadcast companies, Dubai Media Incorporated (DMI) and Emirates Media Incorporated (EMI), to introduce the unique initiative, first in Dubai, then Abu Dhabi and later the entire UAE.

The DVB-H standard, which enables TV broadcasts on Ultra High Frequency (UHF), can be received on mobiles and handheld devices that are DVB-H compatible. The new technology enables television feeds to be transmitted to large numbers of mobile users with high picture and audio quality.”

Middle East is indeed an attractive market for the mobile phone companies. Per capita income here is high and there is still some good room for growth. Mobile phone television has a huge potential market to be tapped in this region. We talk a lot about growth of mobile phones in China and India. Middle Eastern countries have far less population than India and China but the people in the Middle East are quite well off.
