Mobile phone: The latest victim fetishism
November 19, 2006 – 2:37 pmIt looks like mobile phone has become the victim of its success. Easy availability, cheap rate and multi functionality have just promoted it from a gadget to an object of “fetishism.” Some people enjoy talking or doing something else all the time with their mobiles. It is like their lifeline. Without it, they have no purpose in life. In an article published in abcnews.com, forty percent people of USA can not control their lives without mobile phone.
“A recent study showed that 40 percent of people surveyed can’t cope without a cell phone, 35 percent of people used cell phones to escape their problems and 7 percent blamed the cell phone for a lost relationship or job.
Courtney and Tyler Tompkins could probably relate to that study. The Des Moines, Iowa, couple is addicted to cell phones, and “Good Morning America Weekend Edition” decided to test if they could even live without the gadgets.”
Good Morning America asked Courtney and Tyler Tompkins if they could do without their mobile phones for five days and they accepted the challenge. The result was very disappointing. To Courtney, mobile phone is like a watchdog. Very often, she calls her husband to know if he had been cheating on her. Within five days, the couple cracked down without their mobile phones but at last they understood their addiction. Like Courtney and Tyler, there are hundreds of people who could not help without talking or doing something with their mobile phones.
Introduction of mobile phone is a great revolution in the field of communication technology. Now days, a mobile phone is not only used to make calls but for entertainment and various other functions as well. This versatility has become a major problem. Some people have become excessively dependent on mobile phone. This is definitely wrong. We control mobile phones and it should never be the other way round.
