Czech Republic Trying to Curb Mobile Phone Usage Inside Prisons
December 7, 2006 – 2:07 pmWe often see in movies criminal gangsters controlling their group from inside the prison. Well, until the emergence of mobile phone it was a difficult matter. After mobile phones became available, maintaining contact with the outside world for the criminals has become very easy. All they need is just a phone call. This has turned into a serious problem in Czech Republic. Gangsters in prison are communicating with their friends with mobile phones. So, the government of Czech Republic has become cautious about this problem is now allocating a good sum of money to control this security hazard.
The government today earmarked 50 million crowns for blocking mobile phone communications in some tight security prisons, mainly in order to reduce the risk of planned escapes by inmates, Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek told journalists.
The two-year project will be launched at the beginning of 2007.
The Justice Ministry also wants to prevent prisoners from controlling their illegal bargains through mobile phones in this way.
The prison service has installed devices that can reveal the presence of mobile phones in all custody prisons, but in prisons for sentenced criminals this is not possible as the inmates could find and destroy the device.
The problem faced by Czech Republic is not a unique one. Prison officials of every country have to deal with this problem. Well, I feel that more research should be done to tackle this problem. On the one hand, it is very difficult to stop people from using mobile phone inside the prison. On the other hand, if gangsters can have easy access to mobile phones inside the prison then the law and order situation of a society can only go from bad to worse. So, it is upto the researchers to find make new security gadgets that could help prison officials to curb mobile phone usage inside the prison.
What is your idea about it?
