Nokia 2630 - The Barracuda - Now Thinner
May 3, 2007 – 10:54 amNokia is not afraid to extend popular models if they think the improvements will result in more sales. Innovation like that is the reason they sell more cell phones than any other company. Well, they’ve been innovating this week, announcing 7 different new models, including the very nice thin Barracuda 2630.
The Barracuda, or Nokia 2630, is slightly below 10 millimeters (0.4 inch) thick, comparable with most rival thin phones.
The handset will hit the shelves next quarter, with an estimated retail price of 85 euros, excluding operator subsidies and taxes.
“At these prices, the largest volumes are sold — on both developed and emerging markets. Of course we expect to see very high volumes from Barracuda,” Kai Oistamo, head of Nokia’s mobile phones unit, told Reuters.
Oistamo displayed the Barracuda at an investor event last November, in a gesture that calmed many investors’ fears concerning Nokia’s answer to thin phones.
Nokia has been experimenting more and more with a lower cost philosophy, and this phone is no different. It will sell for around $135 US, which should make it affordable to millions. All seven phones they unveiled will retail for under 100 euros, which should help Nokia increase market share in emerging markets.
