The state of Washington’s Governor Chris Gregoire signed new a new safe driving law that prohibits the use of handheld cell phones while driving. She also signed a bill that prohibits drivers from text messaging when they are behind the wheel of a car.

The ban takes effect in July 2008. Drivers using speakerphones, wireless headsets, calling in an emergency or reporting an accident won’t be ticketed.

This cell phone ban is already in place in at least five states.

“To me, this legislation is the beginning, not the end,” said Seattle’s Andrea Okomski, whose son was left in a four-month coma three years ago after being struck by a driver chatting on a cell phone. She now heads up a crash-victim’s advocacy group called Pedestrian Inroads.

I think these laws should be in place everywhere because most people aren’t that great at driving to begin with. Even Chris Gregoire’s peer Tom Corzine suffered injuries in an accident that was caused by text messaging while he was driving and not wearing a seatbelt.
