Motorola Harnesses Wind And Solar Power For Namibia Cell Site

This is the type of news I like to hear. Motorola recently announced that they’ve deployed a cell site in Namibia, South Africa that’s powered by the sun and wind.

The first ever solar and wind powered cell site in Namibia, South Africa

The cell site is located outside of Dordabis village in the Khomas region of Namibia and is a trial with MTC Namibia to provide better voice and data services and coverage in rural areas. It’s the first cell site of it’s kind.

“Motorola has been working with the GSM Association on this project which was announced at 3GSM Barcelona in February this year. “A key challenge in much of Africa is connecting people in off-grid locations and this project seeks to highlight to operators that wind and solar power is a real and cost effective alternative. We expect this pilot to become a showcase for the industry and to see replication of the model thereafter,” said Dawn Hartley, Development Fund manager at the GSMA.

I’m tickled to hear that Motorola came up with an eco-friendly solution to a modern problem. I am all for alternative energy sources being used whenever they can be. Using the elements of the earth to power technology means that technology can reach further than it ever did and empower more humans.

There are plans to extend the network if plans go well and the technology. This cell phone site costs effectively “zero” to operate and is a a change for the better in the region.

Hopefully it will spread.

All in all, very cool and cutting edge stuff from Motorola.
