Good news for mobile phone users in the EU. EU Governments recently agreed to cap the cost of roaming fees for consumers dialing abroad.

Beginning in August when a traveler crosses over a border their mobile phone will beep, letting them know they’ve left the service area. Mobile phones will also display the cost for subscribers to make a phone call. This decision to cap roaming fees could reduce cellualr bills by as much as 70%.

This is a great day for consumers and businesses,” said EU Telecom Commissioner Viviane Reding, the driving force behind the change. She has accused telecom companies of ripping off customers by charging unjustified and extortionate prices.

The new roaming cap will take effect on June 30, 2007. Telecom companies will have a month to offer customers a new pricing structure that reflects the changes in roaming fees.
