Samsung Passes Motorola In Sales

July 16, 2007 – 3:57 pm

Motorola is slipping and Samsung is on the way up. Even if the numbers weren’t official, it’s been easy to get that very impression in the last 12 months, just from looking at the varying success of the company’s product launches.

Samsung overtook Motorola’s shipments of 36 million phones in Q2, as analysts predicted, giving Samsung around 14.4% global market share compared with Motorola’s 13.7%.

Samsung shipped 37.4 million units in the second quarter of 2007, up 49% year-on-year, thanks to strong sales of the Ultra Edition handsets and emerging market growth.

Ovum analyst Martin Garner said: ‘Samsung’s handset business has been growing strongly over the last year, fuelled by its Ultra Edition and its push into lower tiers for emerging markets. In revenue terms Samsung had already overtaken Motorola as the second place vendor. But the big news this quarter is that its shipments have overtaken Motorola’s.

Motorola has had a tough time reaching sales targets in the last few months and have warned analysts again that this may re-occur. Motorola is in dire need of a big winning handset.
