The California Senate passed a bill (SB 33) that will prohibit drivers under the age of 18 from communicating in any way while they are behind the wheel of a car. This ban includes the use of both handsfree (Bluetooth) and handheld devices.

“Year after year, car crashes are the number-one cause of death among teenagers. The young drivers who are using cell phones pagers and PDAs while driving are putting not only themselves at risk but all of us as well.” said Sen. Joe Simitian, D-Palo Alto, author of the bill.
If the Governor of California chooses to sign this bill into law, it will become effective on July 1, 2008.
Fines for breaking this law will be $20 for the first offense and $50 for additional offenses.
