iPhone Ringtones From Apple

September 3, 2007 – 10:32 am

It looks like Apple may plan on selling iPhone Ringtones. The rumor is that Apple will announce the new ringtones for iPhone at the new Apple event on September 5th.

The answer is yes, if you believe the New York Post, and they will be iPhone-compatible only, which likely means some AAC Fairplay lockdown. Expected at the Apple Event this coming Wednesday 5th, the service will let you pick a snippet of any iTunes Store track and use it to annoy fellow commuters and cinema-goers. You’ll also be able to convert any music you have previously bought from Apple.

The Post doesn’t mention price, but we’d hope that the tones are cheaper than the current rip-off, two-dollar-plus offering from the cellphone carriers. Anything more than iTunes standard $0.99 per track would certainly be odd: who would pay extra for a 30 second clip when you can get the whole song for less?

Let’s face it: if Apple doesn’t offer ringtones for the iPhone, then someone else will. Ambrosia is already in the game and so will be others soon enough.
