Intel is hoping to make a bigger name for themselves in the telco world. It’s not surprising. The mobile phone industry represents a huge market for any OEM, and Intel has always been one of the largest and most innovative. So when they say WiMax equipment is coming, people listen.

With a planned $5 billion dollar build-out by Sprint, a growing ecosystem of WiMax device manufacturers, and some progress on the interoperability and standard fronts, the wireless technology is about to go public in a big way, according to the chipmaker.

Mirroring Paul Otellini’s comments yesterday, David Perlmutter (pictured right), the company’s senior vice president of the mobility group, promised that consumers will see WiMax-enabled notebooks in 2008. For real, this time.

This can only be good news for projects such as Sprint’s big WoMax buildout. There’s going to more where that comes from, especially if the WiMax capability is built into notebooks, and there’s actually a network to use for the service. With both pieces in place, expect demand to rise rapidly.
