Disney recently announced that they are discontinuing their cell phone service (through Sprint Nextel) on December 31, 2007.

Disney cited competition and not having enough market share to sustain the mobile service geared towards families.

“We have a great brand image and a great product, but we were not seeing the ability to reach the scale we thought was necessary,” said John Spelich, an executive with the Walt Disney Internet Group.

Alex Besen, founder of The Besen Group, a wireless industry consulting firm had this to say regarding Disney’s decision to close their cell phone division.

Disney faced an incredibly challenging task in crafting a successful family-oriented service, Besen said. The issues confronted included the industry’s long-term contracts, intricately crafted calling plans and the fact that a child, a soccer mom and a business executive all tend to seek different features in a cell phone.

“They underestimated the complexity of the mobile market,” Besen said.

Subscribers to the service have been advised to switch to another provider by November 30, 2007, if they wish to keep their cell phone number. Additional information and updates will be available at disneymobile.go.com
