Michigan County Wants To Implement Cell Phone Surcharges
November 9, 2007 – 9:22 amIn Midland County, Michigan your cell phone bill could get a bit higher if the County Board of Commissioners has their way. The board wants to add a surcharge on cellular phones for 911 emergency calls.
The bills in the state Senate provide for a statewide surcharge of 25 cents on all cellular phones and for an optional tax that counties may levy, Administrator/Controller David Benda said.
He said more than 50 percent of Midland County’s emergency 911 calls originate from cell phones.
Under this bill, the county could add the surcharge for any device that has access to 911 emergency services.
What are your thoughts on this matter? Do you think it’s “fair” to the consumer?
