Nokia Goes Green

November 13, 2007 – 6:52 pm

As the years wear on, the threat to the environment caused by mobile phones grows larger. Nokia, as the largest maker of handsets is looking to reduce the impact they have on the environment.

Nokia, whose devices are used by around 900 million people, was the first phone company to include reminders in its devices encouraging people to unplug the charger once the battery was full, to save energy.

“Initiatives like the reminder? There are several things. New ideas on how we can use mobile technology to support environmental sustainability,” said Sormunen, on the sidelines of a business and biodiversity conference in Lisbon on Tuesday.

“Our goal is to use the communication devices to enable consumers to make better choices.”

The energy-saving alerts began with the Nokia 1200, Nokia 1208 and the Nokia 1650 handsets and have been expanding across the Nokia product range.

There’s no question the company, and all other equipment makers, will have to do more when it comes to being green. The future of the environment depends on it.
