We take a look at unlocked GSM Cell Phones. The first thing you need to understand is what a GSM phone is. A GSM cell phone logs into a GSM network and requires a SIM card. The main advantage to an unlocked GSM cell phone is that is should be portable while you’re traveling in foreign countries, provided that country has a GSM network.

GSM cell phones run on SIM cards. It essence, this means you can remove one SIM, replace it with another, and your phone will still work. An unlocked GSM cell phone offers a certain degree of freedom because of this ability.
So, the SIM (subscriber information module) works both way:
1) Your SIM, plugged into a different phone identifies you as the subscriber of that phone
2) Your phone, with another SIM plugged in, will be identified as a subscribed to another GSM network
Most international networks are GSM, so an unlocked GSM cell phone with the proper SIM card should work when you travel. Hopefully this article clarifies some of the advantages of unlocked GSM cell phones.

Cellphones should come unlocked when you buy them!
If that is not the case a quick and easy call (to your provider) can resolve the problem.
