According to a presentation published by the Boy Genius Report, AT&T will sell the 8-GB iPhone 3G for $599 and the 16-GB iPhone 3G for $699 without requiring buyers to commit to a two-year contract. Contract-free iPhones are expected to be available March 26.

The “no-commit” price is only available to existing AT&T customers.

The promotion is for current customers who want to give an iPhone to someone else as a gift. AT&T is expected to release a new iPhone this summer, and is most likely planning on getting rid of their old inventory first.

AT&T just announced they are launching a mobile platform for their mobile phone subscribers to stay connected with their favorite social networking platforms. The application, developed by Intercasting Corporation, allows users to maintain and manage several social networking platforms with one easy to use interface.

“Our social networking applications are among our highest-performing category, and we anticipate sustained interest from consumers as social networks continue to explode in popularity and diversify in purpose,” said Mark Collins, vice president of Consumer Products for AT&T’s wireless unit. “The My Communities application brings unmatched simplicity, increased functionality and deeper integration to this space, a combination we believe will win over active users and newcomers alike.”

My Communities is compatible with MySpace, the mobile-only community Rabble, blogging sites LiveJournal and Xanga and the photo-sharing site Photobucket. My Communities also features sites whose members share common characteristics such as ethnicity (AsianAve, BlackPlanet, MiGente), faith (FaithBase) or sexual orientation (GLEE). Subscribers get instant access to additional sites as soon as they are added to My Communities and will be alerted to updates when they launch the application — no upgrade is required. Through My Communities, subscribers can register for social sites directly from their phone without ever having to go to the Web, a feature not common with most other social networking applications.

This application is available on 23 devices for a monthly subscription of $2.99 a month. To find out more or to see if your mobile device qualifies, please visit AT&T’s Media Mall.

The Terry family said they wished they would have received some kind of warning before receiving their 200-page bill in the mail for $19,370.
In July, their son headed north to Vancouver, Canada, and used a laptop with an AirCard to send photos and e-mails back home. The bill showed he used the service 21 times, but because he was out of the country, the activity added up to thousands of dollars in charges.
The AirCard allows users to connect to e-mail, the Internet and business applications while traveling, according to AT&T’s Web site. On the Terry family’s bill, they were charged international fees for the service.

The family says they don’t want to pay the bill because an AT&T rep told them they wouldn’t be charged for the calls.

AT&T recently announced that they have deployed a new cell site in Greensboro, North Carolina.

The addition of this new cell site will help to improve coverage and capacity in the region.

“We want to provide the best service possible for all of our customers in Greensboro, which we consider a strategic market in the Carolinas,” said Alison Hall, vice president and general manager for AT&T’s North and South Carolina market. “These new cell sites, along with our 3G expansion, help to provide superior coverage to give customers an ‘invisible wire’ that extends their broadband experience beyond their office or home.”

Currently, AT&T is adding additional cell sites to strengthen in-building and residential coverage in the following areas:

    — I-85 bypass at Pleasant Garden Road
— Joseph Bryan Boulevard and New Garden Road at Brassfield Shopping
Center
— I-40, near Patterson Road, west of Holden Road
— Highway 29 and Market Street, near Bingham Park
— Highway 29, northeast of Greensboro
— Northern Greensboro, at North Church Street and Archergate Road

Look for these upgrades and improvements coming to Greensboro and the surrounding areas soon.

The company partnered with Code Factory to offer Mobile Speak and Mobile Magnifier work with Windows Mobile and Symbian Series 60 operating system devices.

Mobile Speak is a powerful, full-fledged screen reader with an easy-to-learn command structure, intuitive speech feedback in several languages and Braille support, which can be used with or without speech. Unlike other screen readers for mobile phones, Mobile Speak automatically detects information that the blind user should know, just as a user with sight would easily find highlighted items or key areas of the screen at a glance. Supported applications and functions include:

    — Speed dial, call lists and contacts
— Text messaging
— Calendar, tasks, notes and calculator
— Internet browser
— Word, Excel and PowerPoint
— Voice Recorder, Media Player, voice speed dial and voice command
— Phone/device settings, profiles, alarms and ringtones

Mobile Speak is offered with a choice of three Text-To-Speech engines, Fonix, Acapela or Loquendo, allowing the phone to speak English, Spanish or both.

Mobile Magnifier is a flexible, full-screen magnification application that supports low- and high-resolution screens and can be used with or without speech feedback. Magnification software is compatible with a wide range of mobile devices. Unique features include:

    — Magnification levels from 1.25x to 16x
— Font-smoothing for easier readability
— Three different layouts: a full-screen, split and distributed view
— Different color schemes, including inverted color
— Automatic panning and cursor-tracking
— Automatic zoom function that detects areas of interest on the screen

Supported phones include Nokia N75, Nokia E62, Cingular 3125, Samsung BlackJack (Windows Mobile version 5), and Pantech Duo (Windows Mobile version 6).
