Sprint is formalizing a plan that will make their store employees know more about the phones they’re selling. This, in turn, should help the customers who come into the store get a better handle on the phones they’re purchasing. The move is not unlike what’s been going on with electronic stores that attempt to demystify gadgets. The better the customer understands what they’re buying, the more likely they are to purchase the time.

Spring has 1,900 stores nationwide, all of which were closed recently in order to facilitate training.

Customers who don’t have time for the 10-minute to half-hour sessions can make appointments for later visits. These free sessions will be available to existing subscribers as well, even if they aren’t buying a new phone or accessory, Dixon said.

The company tested the system in St. Louis and Pittsburgh in July, and customer satisfaction improved so much that the company rushed it into a nationwide launch, she said.

Sprint said a better educated customer was also less likely to want to return a phone.

Today Sprint Nextel is releasing a new product called The Airave which is designed to boost cell phone signals in homes and buildings.

The Airave will be available for sale in Denver and parts of Indianapolis and increases cell phone reception up to 5,000 square feet. It can handle up to three calls at once. Airave uses a customer’s existing broadband connection, sending unlimited calls through the Internet instead of over Sprint’s wireless network. Airave works with any Sprint cellular phone, but isn’t compatible with Nextel phones.

The Airave is available for $49.99 (not including incentives or rebates) and has a monthly charge of $15 for individuals and $30 for families. For the time being, it is only available in these test markets, but the company is hoping to have a nationwide rollout of the Airave in 2008.

Sprint Nextel will pay $307.2 million and assume $5.3 million in debt, said spokesman James Fisher. Sprint Nextel is based in Reston, Virginia. The deal still requires regulatory approval and is expected to close in the third quarter of this year.

Northern PCS already services over 236,000 Sprint Nextel subscribers in parts of Minnesota, North Dakota, Wisconsin and Iowa.

This is the first affiliate acquisition that Sprint has done last summer. iPCS Inc., Shenandoah Telecommunications and Swiftel Communications are the three last affiliates that Sprint has left. They’ve already bought out a number of affiliates to streamline business.

Interactive Corp recently announced that Ask.com started offering a web search service that would let people find shops and services based on their location in just a matter of seconds.

The mobile GPS service called “Ask Mobile GPS” was made available on Ask’s website last Friday. Ask Mobile GPS will be available to Sprint Nextel wireless customers that have a qualifying phone (7 Models are currently supported.) and are willing to pay an additional $9.99 monthly.

“The Web has evolved to being an essential daily tool in people’s lives and that doesn’t stop when you leave the house,” Ask.com Chief Executive Jim Lanzone said in an interview ahead of the Reuters Global Technology, Media and Telecoms Summit in New York next week.

“Up to 30 to 40 percent of what is done on the Web could move to mobile,” Lanzone said. “At the end of the day, everyone needs to go mobile. But being early in the game can help lock people in for the long term.”

Also in the works are location based advertising, so if a person is looking for a flower store in the area the phone will give directions and a coupon, letting advertisers know just how the customers found them.

Do you like the idea of being able to get coupons on your phone?
