Vodafone is announcing new phones for Europe for the holiday season, and one of the handsets is a high end touch screen phone that should rival the iPhone.

The British mobile phone operator has an exclusive agreement to offer the F700 smartphone from Samsung Electronics, said Jens Schulte-Bokum, head of the global terminal division at Vodafone.

The Vodafone F700 is based on proprietary technology developed by Samsung. The phone, which Vodafone plans to customize and co-brand, has been referred to by industry pundits as an “iPhone killer.”

The F700 has touch-screen capabilities and plays audio and video files. But unlike the iPhone, the device has a pull-down QWERTY keyboard and support for 3G (third-generation) and HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access), which has speeds theoretically as high as 7.2M bps (bits per second).

Vodafone is Britain’s largest mobile phone operator, and is expected to put their support behind the new phone. According to them, they are disappointed that the iPhone from Apple does not support 3G.

Vodafone recently announced plans to release two ultra low cost mobile phones sold under the Vodafone brand name. They are the result of a partnership with Chinese manufacturer ZTE Corporation. These cell phones will be offered as a low cost alternative to mobile phones from Motorola and Nokia.

They are aimed at emerging cell phone markets like India and Africa.

The Vodafone 225

The Vodafone 125 and the Vodafone 225 are second generation (2G) phones that will sell for between $25.00 – $45.00, depending on the market and the model number.

Reliance Communications, based in India recently released low cost phones and have sold a million units since their introduction on May 2, 2007.

Vodaphone made it clear that they were trying to establish themselves as a cell phone brand and that partly stems from a desire to have more control over design and functionality than the top vendors have been willing to give it.

Would you be interested in an affordable phone made by Vodaphone?

One of the great things about cell phones and converging devices is the ability to do so many things with one handheld device.

Today Vodaphone announced that they had made an agreement with Google to develop maps for use on cell phones.

“Vodafone sees Google Maps as a new milestone in the relationship that both companies are developing. It is a prime example of how Vodafone, through its location service and distribution scale, can complement Google’s products and unlock mass-market access to exciting services,” said Frank Rovekamp, global chief marketing officer of Vodafone.

This should make getting around town a little bit easier for mobile phone users. Vodaphone will provide easy-to-use maps, local listings and search and navigation capabilities in conjunction with Google Earth.

Is mapping a feature that you would find handy in daily life?

Wire-tapping at the highest levels of the Greek government? My Big Fat Greek Wire Tapping Scandal is what this one is, and apparently Vodaphone Greece provided the taps, unwittingly for sure. It’s not clear on actually placed the bugging software, but they directly intercepted mobile phone calls made by certain Greek government officials, mostly around the time of the Summer Olympics.

The government went public with the case almost a year after it was informed by Vodafone of the taps. The wire tapping took place from June 2004 until March 2005 and mostly around the August 2004 Athens Olympics.

There’s some speculation that US intelligence is involved, but obviously there’s little proof of that. This case shows us what we should all know: assume someone is listening when you speak on your mobile phone.
