AT&T just announced they are launching a mobile platform for their mobile phone subscribers to stay connected with their favorite social networking platforms. The application, developed by Intercasting Corporation, allows users to maintain and manage several social networking platforms with one easy to use interface.

“Our social networking applications are among our highest-performing category, and we anticipate sustained interest from consumers as social networks continue to explode in popularity and diversify in purpose,” said Mark Collins, vice president of Consumer Products for AT&T’s wireless unit. “The My Communities application brings unmatched simplicity, increased functionality and deeper integration to this space, a combination we believe will win over active users and newcomers alike.”

My Communities is compatible with MySpace, the mobile-only community Rabble, blogging sites LiveJournal and Xanga and the photo-sharing site Photobucket. My Communities also features sites whose members share common characteristics such as ethnicity (AsianAve, BlackPlanet, MiGente), faith (FaithBase) or sexual orientation (GLEE). Subscribers get instant access to additional sites as soon as they are added to My Communities and will be alerted to updates when they launch the application — no upgrade is required. Through My Communities, subscribers can register for social sites directly from their phone without ever having to go to the Web, a feature not common with most other social networking applications.

This application is available on 23 devices for a monthly subscription of $2.99 a month. To find out more or to see if your mobile device qualifies, please visit AT&T’s Media Mall.

Nokia recently announced plans to bring Microsoft’s Silverlight to millions of Smartphones with an
S60 on Symbian OS as well as Series 40 devices and internet tablets.

This program will give developers a platform to create rich interactive programs for the Smartphone and other devices.

“There is clear market demand for rich, Web-based services across a variety of device types, but developing these can often be commercially difficult. For Microsoft this extends Silverlight to a broader range of vendors, platforms and devices. For Nokia it expands the web runtime options on its devices, enabling a wider community of developers and more applications. This should help the uptake of higher speed mobile services and advance a new era of anytime, anywhere device-based computing”, said Bola Rotibi , Principal Analyst at Ovum.

Microsoft Silverlight is a cross-browser, cross-platform plug-in for delivering next-generation media experiences and rich interactive applications. Availability of Silverlight for Nokia Series 40 devices and Nokia Internet tablets will be confirmed later.

Spinvox has released a 10 point guide to polite cell phone practices. Here are the top offenses and what you can do to make sure you aren’t considered “rude.”

1. The Offense: ‘Loud Speakers’ – People talking at a volume that’s loud enough for everyone around them to hear. Your conversation is really not interesting to others, even if you’re name dropping.
The Remedy: Try finding a more appropriate location to have your conversation.

2. The Offense: ‘Taste Blasters’ – People that shout their musical preferences through their ringtones.
The Remedy: Consider your environment and adjust the volume of your ringer accordingly.

3. The Offense: ‘Chow Chatterers’ – People that use their cell phones at the dinner table … eating and talking at the same time!
The Remedy: If you need to take the call, consider leaving the table and finding a more suitable area to have your conversation.

4. The Offense: ‘Spinal Tappers’ – People with their speaker volumes ‘turned up to eleven’, or having conversations in public through their speakerphones.
The Remedy: Be courteous to those around you by adjusting your speaker volume and only using your speakerphone at home or in your office.

5. The Offense: ‘Text Maniacs’ – People that are constantly texting — during conversations, meetings, meals, etc. That’s just rude …
The Remedy: If you absolutely cannot wait to generate or reply to a text, politely excuse yourself from whatever you are doing before texting.

6. The Offense: ‘Check-Out Blockers’ – People that are talking on the phone at the check-out station when they should be paying and collecting their things. Those people waiting behind you are there for a reason …
The Remedy: When it is your turn, put the cell phone away. If you must continue your conversation, consider letting others skip ahead in line.

7. The Offense: ‘Ring Cyclists’ – People that let their cell phones ring and ring, rather than answer or silence them. No one wants to hear the repeating bars of your “thong song” ring tone.
The Remedy: Have your cell phone in a convenient place where you can answer it quickly, instead of in a deep pocket or at the bottom of a handbag.

8. The Offense: ‘Free Samplers’ – People that select their ringtones in public by freely sampling each and every one … loudly …
The Remedy: Be considerate of those around you and sample your ringtones in private — other people simply aren’t interested.

9. The Offense: ‘Walk ‘n Scrollers’ – People texting or hunting through their contacts while walking. A great way to multitask, but be careful who or what you bump into!
The Remedy: Before texting or searching through your phone, consider stopping and stepping aside instead of walking.

10. The Offense: ‘Can Conversationalists’ – People that take calls in public bathroom stalls. Restrooms are for taking care of business, not taking calls …
The Remedy: Just don’t do this.
