Nokia Stays On Top Of SmartPhone Market
by Darren
March 12, 2009 – 11:17 amNokia has remained the number one make of smartphones, but their dominance may be slipping. For right now, though, Nokia remains squarely in the lead.
According to the research firm, Nokia sold 60.9 million smartphones last year for a total market share of 43.7 percent. That’s more than double the market share of its closest competitor, Research In Motion, which commanded 16.6 percent.
The rest of the report on Nokia was mixed. The company faces continuing and substantial competition in all of their markets, as well as intense downward pressure on their margins. Like all cell phone makers, they’re also susceptible to the fickle nature of cell phone enthusiasts. If one or more of their most popular phones were to lose popularity, it could cause major headaches for the company.
Right now Nokia remains strong, but must meet their challenges head on.
